State-wise Solar Subsidy 2026: Uttarakhand vs the Rest of India

How much solar subsidy you get in India depends on which state your roof is in. Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, most states get a central subsidy of up to ₹78,000, while Uttarakhand and other special-category hill states get a higher central rate of up to ₹85,800. On top of that, a few states add their own state subsidy, which can push their totals even higher.

This guide lays out the whole picture in two simple tables: what the central government pays everywhere, and which states add something extra of their own.

The central subsidy: two rates, not one

PM Surya Ghar is a central scheme, so the base subsidy comes from the Government of India in every state. But the scheme's benchmark rates are about 10% higher for special-category states, in recognition of higher transport and installation costs in hill and remote regions.

The special-category list covers Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, all eight North-Eastern states (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura), and the island territories of Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep.

So if your roof is in Haridwar, Roorkee, Dehradun or anywhere else in Uttarakhand, your central subsidy runs on the higher rate automatically. Same scheme, same portal, better numbers.

States that add their own top-up

A handful of state governments layer their own subsidy on top of the central amount. This is why you may have heard of totals bigger than ₹85,800 in some states:

• They come and go. State schemes depend on that year's budget, and portals open and close. The central subsidy is the dependable part.
• They usually have their own paperwork, run by the state agency or DISCOM, separate from the national portal.
• Uttarakhand has no separate state top-up as of 2026. What we have instead is the permanently higher central rate.
